Launch-week megathread — fan-curated roll-up

This is a fan-curated roll-up of common player questions and short, sourced answers for the launch week of How Many Dudes?. It is not affiliated with Reddit or any forum, and all commentary is independently written for this guide. Use it as a quick lookup before opening the official subreddit or the official Dudex.

Top asked launch-week questions

Topic 1 — Online or single-player?

OP (u/pixelpod_dan): "Can I play this with friends, or is it a solo game?"

I just got the launch build and every part of the run loop feels single-player. Is there a co-op or versus mode I am missing, or is this entirely solo?

Top replies

  • u/ranchminder (+186) — It is single-player. The studio describes the game as a solo roguelike autobattler and no online mode has been announced, so your run lives on your own save. (howmanydudes.com)
  • u/ploppernotpopper (+54) — Nothing in the launch build offers multiplayer. Posting Flyers, fighting waves, and buying Relics are all built around one player managing one Roster.
  • u/hexwrangler (+31) — Treat it as solo until the studio says otherwise; the current Dudex and the patch page mention no PvP or co-op features.
  • u/steamdecker (+12) — Solo, yes. The official launch guide frames the whole game around building your own army rather than facing other players.

Mod/OP summary: See the beginner guide for the core solo loop and a first-run checklist.

Topic 2 — Best build and strongest Dudes

OP (u/tierchaser_92): "What is the actual best build right now?"

Every thread I open has a different five-Dude lineup. Is there a current meta, or is it all match-dependent?

Top replies

  • u/team_shell_kev (+203) — There is no verified universal best build. The repeatable answer is a four-part shell: one damage engine, one control or protection Dude, one sustain Dude, and two flex slots that reinforce the same plan. (builds guide)
  • u/critspender (+58) — "Strongest Dude" depends on the function your roster lacks. Ninja wants Crits, Cyborg wants repeated Direct Damage, Samurai finishes low-HP targets, and a missing healer usually beats a second damage core.
  • u/dude_theorist (+33) — Check the patch version before trusting any list. Pre-release beta posts covered a different build, so dated screenshots do not describe the launch line.
  • u/pipcounter (+14) — The official Dudex is the safest source for current ability text; build around what is actually written there rather than what a thread claims.

Mod/OP summary: See the builds guide for the four-part shell method and the tier list for role-based drafting.

Topic 3 — Relic and Trinket pool control

OP (u/relicjunkie): "Why do I keep missing the Relic I planned around?"

I screenshot a build that needs one specific Relic and then never see it in a run. Am I doing something wrong with the pool?

Top replies

  • u/poolwatcher (+142) — Posting a Flyer adds that Dude Type's seven Relics and its Family's eight Relics to the pool, each added once. A wide Family spread gives more options but dilutes the odds of any single piece. (Dudex)
  • u/trinket_tom (+49) — Remember each Roster Dude Type can bind one Trinket per run. Treat the Trinket as part of that Dude's build, not as a free stat stick.
  • u/rancher_at_midnight (+26) — Pre-Posted Flyers open their Relics immediately. If you want a narrow pool, keep the Family spread small early and let a fallback plan cover a piece that never appears.
  • u/kitchen_draw (+11) — The Dudex indexed 374 Relics when I last checked, so a specific piece is never guaranteed. Build for what shows up, not for the screenshot.

Mod/OP summary: See the relics guide for the current pool rules and an item-pick checklist.

Topic 4 — Cross-save and Rumpus

OP (u/twodevices): "Does my phone save carry over to my PC?"

I want to switch between Steam and my phone. Is progress synced, or am I starting over on each device?

Top replies

  • u/rumpus_rider (+167) — Yes, through Rumpus. Sign into the same Rumpus account on each supported device and the same progress continues across them. (support page)
  • u/localfiles_fan (+44) — Local saves still exist for support. On Windows they sit under AppData\Local\HowManyDudes, and iOS exposes File Sharing where supported; Android is not normally accessible without rooting. (support page)
  • u/turntableten (+28) — Cross-save covers supported platforms, which is not the same as every platform. Confirm both of your devices are in the supported list before relying on it.
  • u/steamdeckdunes (+13) — I ran the Steam demo and the full version on the same account and the demo progress carried over cleanly. One Rumpus identity keeps it smooth.

Mod/OP summary: See the platforms guide for the Rumpus setup and local save locations.

Topic 5 — Demo and free trial

OP (u/trybeforebuy): "Is there a free way to try this before buying?"

I do not want to pay before I know the loop clicks for me. What official options exist?

Top replies

  • u/demo_hunter (+155) — The Steam demo is the only current official demo and the closest to the released game, and its progress transfers to the Steam full version. (howmanydudes.com)
  • u/legacy_arcade (+47) — The official site also lists legacy pre-alpha browser demos on itch.io and GX.games, but those differ substantially from the launch build, and there is no full-game browser release. (howmanydudes.com)
  • u/noscope_scam (+29) — Stay away from unofficial "free" downloads. The developer warns these are likely scam or malware attempts, so the lawful free route is the Steam demo.
  • u/savechaser (+15) — If you end up buying on mobile after the demo, remember Rumpus can sync your progress between Steam and supported mobile platforms instead of starting over.

Mod/OP summary: See the platforms guide for the three official demo locations and lawful free options.

Topic 6 — Patch notes and 1.0.5 versions

OP (u/versionwatcher): "Why is my build number different from the patch notes?"

My store shows one version but the patch page lists a newer one. Which one is the real current game?

Top replies

  • u/patchpage_reader (+138) — The official patch page listed 1.0.5-rc.8 dated August 1, 2026 when I last checked, but it also says only builds marked released are generally available. (patchnotes)
  • u/storefront_scout (+51) — Storefronts lag the patch page. Google Play was surfacing 1.0.5-rc.7 in its What's new field, so a mismatch between stores is expected early in launch week. (patchnotes)
  • u/balancetracker (+24) — Treat "release candidate" as not necessarily live everywhere. If the Dudex and your build disagree, the Dudex wording can update before your store does.
  • u/cautious_farmer (+10) — For balance questions, quote your build number and the date in any report. It saves everyone a round of guessing about which version you saw.

Mod/OP summary: See the platforms guide for the current version scope and how store builds can differ.

Topic 7 — Mobile performance on Android and iOS

OP (u/commuter_gamer): "How does this run on phones?"

I mostly play on Android but might switch to an iPhone. Is one platform noticeably better?

Top replies

  • u/thumbwarmer (+119) — Mobile is capped at 60 FPS for battery and heat and uses touch controls, so both platforms target a similar smooth baseline rather than desktop frame rates. (support page)
  • u/battery_bro (+46) — There are no controlled cross-device benchmarks yet. Early anecdote threads report fine results on recent flagships on both stores, but that is not a measured comparison.
  • u/heat_helicopter (+27) — Long sessions will warm the phone; the FPS cap exists partly for that. Expect less than a desktop machine with 4K assets and uncapped frames.
  • u/dropframe_dan (+9) — If hardware matters to you, the Steam demo on a desktop tells you more about the performance ceiling than any phone guess can.

Mod/OP summary: See the platforms guide for the official mobile performance notes.

Topic 8 — Console versions

OP (u/couchplayer): "Is How Many Dudes? coming to PS5, Xbox, or Switch?"

I only play on consoles and do not want to buy on PC if a port is coming soon.

Top replies

  • u/console_watcher (+131) — There is no current PS5, Xbox, or Switch version and no announced console plan. The studio says console support is not currently planned. (howmanydudes.com)
  • u/port_hopeful (+42) — "Not currently planned" is not a no forever, but do not buy a console port in advance. Treat the mobile and Steam release as the full current lineup.
  • u/steamdecker (+23) — If a TV is your goal, a Steam Deck hooked to a TV may be the closest current path, using trackpads since there is no native gamepad support.
  • u/buyer_beware (+8) — Do not prepay for a console version that has not been announced; there is nothing official to reserve yet.

Mod/OP summary: See the platforms guide for the current console answer and the full platform list.

Topic 9 — Mac, Linux, and Chromebook support

OP (u/nonwindows_user): "Is there any official Mac or Linux support?"

I am on a Chromebook and a friend is on a Mac. Can either of us play the full game?

Top replies

  • u/platform_sherlock (+126) — Not officially. The Steam page lists Windows and Steam Deck support, and the full game is otherwise on Android and iOS; no Mac, Linux, or Chromebook build is listed. (Steam)
  • u/compat_tester (+45) — We have not verified community workarounds like compatibility layers, and the studio does not support them. A non-listed OS is a gamble, not a supported setup.
  • u/clouddrifter (+25) — Android and iOS are the official mobile paths. Chromebooks sometimes run Android apps, but official support for that route has not been confirmed.
  • u/streamdeck_rider (+11) — The Steam Deck runs the game through its Linux-based system with trackpad controls, which is the only "non-Windows" setup officially described.

Mod/OP summary: See the platforms guide for the full official platform list.

Topic 10 — Pricing, regional pricing, and refunds

OP (u/budget_builder): "Why does the price look different on every store?"

I saw $9.99 on one store and $14.99 on another. Is there a regional pricing policy or a refund rule I should know?

Top replies

  • u/pricetag_watcher (+144) — The stated standard prices were $14.99 USD on Steam and $9.99 USD on mobile, but storefront discounts, regional pricing, currency, and tax change independently, so check your store before paying. (Steam)
  • u/refund_reader (+52) — Steam purchases follow Steam's standard refund window of under two hours played and within fourteen days. Mobile store refunds vary by region and store rules, so read the store's own policy.
  • u/currency_check (+30) — The same USD figure is not the same number in local currency after conversion and tax. Compare the total checkout price, not the headline dollar value.
  • u/sale_scout (+16) — Launch-week sales move the price. A frozen price screenshot from a guide can be outdated by the time you open the store.

Mod/OP summary: See the platforms guide for the stated launch pricing and how storefronts differ.
