How Many Dudes? Launch Team Shells — Named Builds to Test
Launch team shells for How Many Dudes?: Crit & Finish, Cyborg Stack, and Safe Dividend Economy. Named from current Dudex abilities — not a universal best five. Cross-links to roster, needs tier, and relics.
Launch Team Shells
There is no verified universal best five-Dude build for the launch version. The most repeatable answer is a team shell: one damage engine, one source of enemy control or damage transfer, one sustain engine, and two flex slots that deepen the same triggers or solve the run's current weakness.
That answer is intentionally versioned to the launch 1.0.5 line, checked August 3, 2026. The official patch page lists 1.0.5-rc.8 on August 1, while Google Play was still surfacing 1.0.5-rc.7; the developer also warns that only builds marked released are generally available. We therefore use current Dudex ability text and avoid patch-specific numerical rankings.
Roster names: all 42 Unique Dudes. Role gaps: 2026 Launch Needs Tier.
The four-part build method
- Choose a damage trigger. Direct Crits suit Ninja; repeated attacks scale Cyborg; periodic effects suit Wizard or Trooper; Samurai helps finish the lowest-HP enemy.
- Add control or protection. Knight repeatedly Taunts nearby enemies, Paladin transfers part of the damage taken by two Blessed allies, and Spartan can Block Direct Damage aimed at nearby Dudes.
- Add sustain. Medic converts damage dealt into healing, Cleric pulses healing around the most-injured Roster Dude, while Chef, Explorer, Ghost, Quantum, Mutant, and Frankendude offer different healing patterns.
- Use the last two slots deliberately. Add a second copy of the core, a complementary trigger, another protector, or Finance for steady end-of-battle income. Do not spend both flex slots on unrelated mechanics just because the Dudes are individually appealing.
Three named launch shells (Dudex-evidenced)
These are testable shells, not ranked prescriptions. Every interaction below is taken from current official ability descriptions already used on this page and the roster; Relics still decide whether the shell works. Item model: Relics and Trinkets.
Crit & Finish
Example five slots: Ninja / Samurai / Knight / Medic or Cleric / flex
- Ninja turns Direct Crits into bouncing Shurikens.
- Samurai repeatedly dashes to the lowest-HP enemy.
- Knight holds nearby enemies with periodic Taunts.
- Medic or Cleric covers Sustain while the Crit/finisher loop runs.
Breaks when: weak Crit access, scattered enemies, or insufficient healing.
Cyborg Stack
Example five slots: Cyborg / Cyborg / Paladin or Knight / Medic / Bard or flex
- Cyborg Direct Damage can stack Attack Power for all Cyborgs.
- Paladin or Knight buys time for the stack to matter.
- Medic covers Sustain; Bard can add temporary Attack Power and Run Speed after repeated Direct Damage.
Breaks when: a slow start, poor survivability, or too few Cyborgs.
Safe Dividend Economy
Example five slots: Finance / damage core / protector / healer / flex
- Finance generates $3 at the end of each battle per Finance Dude (current Dudex Dividend text — not the old pre-launch cash-doubling claim).
- The other four slots must still form a complete Control + Sustain + Damage shell from the method above.
Breaks when: taking too many Finance slots before the combat shell is stable.
Other coherent shells to try
| Shell | Example five slots | Why it is coherent | What can break it |
|---|---|---|---|
| AoE pressure | Wizard / Trooper / Knight or Paladin / Cleric / flex | Fireballs and Orbital Strikes add repeated area damage while the protector and healer buy time | Long fights without enough single-target scaling |
| Undead attrition | Necrodude / Lich / Ghost or Frankendude / Knight or Paladin / flex | Summons, stored damage, and unusual healing create a durable experiment around knockouts and recovery | Treating every Undead mechanic as automatic synergy; Relic support still matters |
How to choose the flex slot
Ask what ended the previous fight:
- A carry was focused: add Knight, Paladin, Spartan, Pirate, Psionic, Agent, or another protection effect.
- The whole roster slowly collapsed: add a broad or frequent healer such as Cleric, Medic, Chef, Explorer, Ghost, Quantum, Mutant, or Frankendude.
- Enemies survived at low HP: Samurai's lowest-HP pursuit or another focused damage source may help.
- The team survived but damage stalled: deepen the existing trigger instead of adding a fifth unrelated engine.
- The shell is already stable: Finance can turn surviving rounds into more buying power, but its current baseline is a $3 Dividend per Finance Dude after each battle — not the old pre-launch cash-doubling description.
Relics and Trinkets decide the final build
A Flyer adds that Dude Type's seven Relics and its Family's eight Relics to the available pool. More Families create more options but dilute the chance of seeing a specific piece. A Roster Dude Type can bind one Trinket during a run. Build around what actually appears rather than forcing a screenshot comp whose key item never entered your pool.

Why this page does not publish an S-tier build
Launch-week player reports disagree: one discussion calls some Dudes weak while another recommends different late-run cores, and a long-time beta player documented major balance and system changes immediately before release. Those reports are useful testing notes, but they do not share a patch, unlock state, sample size, or standardized endpoint. Publishing one of them as a universal answer would manufacture certainty the evidence does not support.
