How Many Dudes? Beginner Guide: Ranch Your First Army

Start the launch version with current Dudex facts: the core loop, a first-run checklist, Finance Dude's real economy ability, Relic-pool control, and safe progression tips.

The short version

How Many Dudes? is a single-player roguelike dudebuilder autobattler by Butterscotch Shenanigans. You recruit a Roster of Dudes, combine baseline Abilities with Relics and Trinkets, fight escalating waves and Act Bosses, earn stars, and move through three challenge tiers.

This guide was rechecked on August 3, 2026 for the launch 1.0.5 line. Use the live official Dudex for exact current wording: several old demo summaries no longer match the released roster.

First-run checklist

  1. Open the Dudex and read each drafted Dude's baseline Ability before buying around it.
  2. Cover three jobs early: damage, enemy control or protection, and sustain.
  3. Spend on Relics that strengthen those jobs instead of collecting unrelated effects.
  4. Save Dude Juice when the team can carry Unconscious Dudes for a few rounds; natural recovery can preserve cash.
  5. Try higher Tiers before fully completing the current one, because early higher-tier rewards can accelerate progression.
  6. Keep one emergency Consumable for a fight that exposes a real weakness.

The core run logic

A Flyer changes more than recruitment. Posting a Dude Type adds that type's seven Relics and its Family's eight Relics to the available pool. A narrow Family spread makes specific Dude Relics relatively easier to find; a broad roster creates more options but dilutes key pieces.

Each Roster Dude Type can bind one Trinket during a run. Treat the Trinket as part of the Dude's build, not a generic stat stick.

Early priorities

  • Control damage before chasing greed. Knight's Taunt, Paladin's damage transfer, Spartan's nearby Block, and other protection tools keep damage dealers operating.
  • Use current economy text. Finance Dude's baseline Dividend generates $3 per Finance Dude at the end of each battle. The old "Business Dude doubles cash" advice is not current launch data.
  • Match stats to triggers. Crit matters to Ninja's Shuriken trigger; Max HP and mitigation matter to frontline protection; Attack Power or DPS can scale several healing and damage abilities.
  • Prepare for one-shots. Max HP, Toughness, Temporary Health, damage transfer, Block/Deflection/Evasion, and Cheat Death solve different failure modes. Do not rely on avoidance alone.
  • Use Consumables actively. Dude Juice revives, Health Potion heals and converts Overhealing to Temporary Health, Burner Phone repositions and shields, Meteor disrupts, and Pocket Dice rerolls key offers.

A safe first team shape

Start with a simple shell rather than five names:

  1. one clear damage engine;
  2. one control/protection Dude;
  3. one sustain Dude;
  4. one slot that reinforces the main trigger;
  5. one flex slot for economy, another protector, or the weakness revealed by the last fight.

The best build guide gives launch-version examples without pretending one lineup is universal. The complete roster lists all 42 Unique Dudes, and the item guide explains the current pools.

What not to assume

Do not assume a pre-launch screenshot, a demo tier list, or a listed release candidate is the same as the build on every platform. The official patch page lists versions but warns that only released-marked builds are generally available. Recheck the Dudex after balance updates and treat player builds as dated experiments.
